Unblocked MCP gives your coding agents access to organizational context they can’t get from code alone — pull request history, messaging threads, issue trackers, documentation, and more. One install works across all your tools. The Unblocked CLI runs the MCP server. The same context is also available as standalone context-* commands you can run directly or wire into scripts and CI. If you are deciding between MCP, the CLI, and the REST API, see Programmatic access to Unblocked.

Prerequisites

Before you start, confirm that:
  • Your team is set up in Unblocked. If it isn’t, get started.
  • You have an Unblocked license. If your team approves licenses manually, request one.
  • You’re on macOS or Linux. On Windows, follow the install guide for your app instead.
  • The coding agents you want to use are installed. The installer sets up only the agents it finds.

Install

1

Run the installer

Run the following command to install Unblocked MCP:
The script downloads the Unblocked CLI and sets up your supported agents.
The install script supports macOS and Linux. On Windows, follow the install guide for your app.
It sets up each supported agent it finds, such as Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode, and Windsurf. It also installs skills: prompts that teach your agents how to use Unblocked.
2

Sign in to Unblocked

The installer opens your browser to sign in. If sign-in doesn’t start or fails, run unblocked auth.
3

Restart your agent

Restart your IDE or agent so it loads the Unblocked MCP configuration. Sessions you opened before installing can’t use Unblocked.
4

Check the connection

Open your agent’s MCP settings and check that unblocked is connected and its tools are listed. In Claude Code, run /mcp.
5

Ask a question

For example:
Use Unblocked to find the most recent pull request that changed our authentication code.
Your agent should call context_research and cite pull requests or discussions.

Give your agent organizational context

After you install Unblocked, your agent can pull in context from PRs, messaging platforms, issue trackers, and documentation. Depending on your agent and its configuration, it may call these tools on its own or when you ask it to use Unblocked.
These two tools replaced the earlier five-tool MCP surface (unblocked_context_engine, research_task, data_retrieval, historical_context, and link_resolver) in April 2026. If a prompt or configuration still uses the old tool names, change them to context_research or context_get_urls. Tools and their descriptions may change again.

Troubleshooting

  • Claude Code shows unblocked as failed or not authenticated: check whether the project’s .mcp.json defines its own unblocked server. That entry replaces your user configuration. Check its command or URL before you trust it: a .mcp.json from a repository you don’t control can impersonate Unblocked and receive the context your agent sends. To fix it, remove the project entry or point it at the official server.
  • A custom MCP client fails OAuth with invalid_redirect_uri: Unblocked hasn’t allowed that client’s callback URL yet. Contact us with the client name so we can add it.
  • Answers are thin or missing sources: check that your team’s data sources are connected. Newly connected sources may still be indexing.

Enterprise Managed Authorization

Organizations using Claude with Okta can configure the Unblocked connector so members connect through their organization’s identity provider instead of completing a separate Unblocked browser sign-in. This setup requires Okta SSO and user and group provisioning. Follow the Claude + Okta setup instructions.
